My Take on Interoperability

• A new major version of a software program does not have to promise interoperability

• It should simply provide significant interoperability

• I'd be perfectly happy with:

  • A perl-7.0.0 which is a clone of perl-5.32.0

    • No promise of interoperability

    • No need for use v5; or use v7;

    • All my new code gets written in perl 7

  • perl-5.32.0 designated maintenance-only; no new features

    • 5- to 10-year maintenance window

    • All my old code stays in perl 5 (until I decide to upgrade it)
