execute Permissions on a Directory: Example

• Directory owned by root but with wide-open permissions:

        $ ls -ld /tmp/explain-execute/
        drwxrwxrwx  2 root  wheel  512 Jul 18 12:57 /tmp/explain-execute/

• Directory holds text file owned by regular user:

        $ ls -l /tmp/explain-execute/
        total 0
        -rw-r--r--  1 jkeenan  wheel  0 Jul 18 12:57 epsilon

• Modify the directory to remove execute permissions from everyone but owner root:

        $ sudo chmod 0766 /tmp/explain-execute/
