Land-Value Taxation

• Strongly endorsed by Richard Murphy in "The Joy of Tax"; advantages include:

  • It can't be avoided; non-payment results in forfeiture of property

  • Encourages productive use of land

  • Allows tax authority to achieve environmental policy goals, e.g., allowances

  • Shifts burden from tenants to landlords

  • Land use tends to improve when land-value taxation is in force
