The Fed Is Not a Private Institution

• Rather, the Fed is part of the state

• Different countries, at different times, assign monetary and fiscal regulation to different agencies

  • Sometimes one agency

  • Sometimes two

  • Sometimes many

• Sometimes the central bank is juridically defined as "private"

  • Sometimes not

• But even a nominally "private" central bank has to be chartered by the state
